How AI Helped a Paralysed Man Walk Again

Today’s Edition

Hey there! Welcome to today's edition, packed with all the hottest news from the world of AI.

  • πŸ“– First up, remember our chat about AI's game-changing potential in healthcare? Well, strap in for this. Ever heard of Gert-Jan Oskam? He's a Dutch guy who, sadly, got paralysed from his hips down after a motorcycle crash in 2011. Guess what? He's back on his feet! Literally! Thanks to this brain-spine interface powered by AI, he's walking again. Just goes to show you the astounding things AI can do, right?

  • πŸ–₯️ Now, let's talk about some cool AI toys you've gotta check out. There's Augment, this new AI assistant that's all the rage right now. Word on the street is, you can sign up for early access. Then, there's BoltAI, which lets you access ChatGPT directly in your favourite Mac apps. So you can chat with me without having to switch context.

  • πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸ’» Onto some fun stuff for the creatives among us. We've got some prompts that are going to be a godsend for designers, especially when it comes to pairing fonts and picking the perfect color gradients. You're going to love this!

  • 🎀 Our most valuable media spotlight this week features some kickass gyms (pun totally intended) and a deep dive into Google Bard on "This Week in Startups".

So grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and let's dive into the fascinating world of AI together. Enjoy!

AI will revolutionise healthcare

AI is shaping up to be the biggest game-changer in healthcare that we've ever seen.

Now, I can't say for sure what the full impact of AI on healthcare will be because, frankly, it's still early days. But let me tell you, the examples we've already got are nothing short of revolutionary.

Take this story, for instance. Gert-Jan Oskam, is a Dutch man who was paralysed from the hips down after a motorcycle accident in 2011? Well, he's walking again. You heard that right – walking! Swiss researchers developed this implant that uses AI as a 'digital bridge' between Gert-Jan's brain and spinal cord. This device, called a brain-spine interface, picks up his thoughts about wanting to walk and sends them to a spinal implant. Gert-Jan said, "Within five to 10 minutes I could control my hips," and that it was "the best outcome for everyone.

But that's not all. You know Google, right? The folks behind the search engine, among other things, are integrating AI into health-related initiatives all around the world. They're using language-generating technology in medical exams, and AI-assisted research to help us find information faster and build health apps. So, the next time you're trying to figure out why your head hurts, AI might be the one to tell you.

AI is also making strides in Southeast Asia. For instance, companies like Doctor Anywhere and MyDoc in Singapore are using AI for remote monitoring services and to connect patients with healthcare providers. VinBrain, a Vietnamese company, is using AI for disease diagnosis and clinical decision support systems. It's like having a doctor in your pocket – pretty cool, huh?

Now, I'd be remiss not to mention the ethical side of things. After all, we're talking about AI making decisions about our health, and that's not something to be taken lightly. We need to ensure the protection of patient data and privacy. Companies need to make sure patients understand how their data is used and who has access to it. VinBrain, for example, has stringent measures in place to anonymise patient data before they use it for training, validation, and testing. And techniques like federated learning and differential privacy are being used to train AI models without sharing raw data, helping to maintain patient privacy.

But the big question is, can we trust algorithms with our health? It's a tricky one. On the one hand, AI can significantly improve patient outcomes by providing more accurate and efficient diagnoses and treatments. But on the other, if the data used to train these algorithms is biased or incomplete, it could lead to inaccurate diagnoses and treatments.

So, there you have it. AI and healthcare – a match made in... well, we're still figuring that out. But the potential is enormous, and the examples we've seen so far are nothing short of inspiring.
