What People Are Saying

Today’s Edition

Hey there! Hope everyone had a great weekend. Welcome to your Monday edition, packed with all the hottest news from the world of AI.

  • 📖 Boston Consulting Group conducted a large survey titled "AI at Work: What People Are Saying". They spoke with 13,000 people of all levels about their thoughts and feelings regarding AI. We have highlighted the most interesting parts of the survey below.

  • 🖥️ Found some killer tools, too. Uncrop lets you change an image's ratio by adding in a matching background. Then there's Interactive Mathematics, it's like a math cheat code (not that we'd cheat, right?).

AI at Work: What People Are Saying

Remember how we discussed the insights from McKinsey & Company on Friday? Well, I spent the weekend delving into the "AI at Work: What People Are Saying" survey conducted by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where they polled a whopping 13,000 people (1,200 from Australia/New Zealand), from top executives to frontline employees, across 18 countries.

Interestingly, the mood towards AI in the workplace has changed dramatically in the last five years. Back then, there was a sense of trepidation, but fast forward to now, and it's a different story. We're seeing a more optimistic outlook towards AI, especially among leaders and regular AI users.

AI usage in companies has more than doubled since 2018, jumping from 22% to 50% in 2023. Almost half of the respondents have experimented with generative AI like ChatGPT, and a good chunk (26%) say they use it regularly. It's like watching a new plant sprout – we're at the very start of a massive growth spurt for AI in business.

But, there's a flip side. The optimism isn't universal, and there's a bit of a divide between the leaders and frontline employees. While 44% of leaders have received AI-related training, only 14% of frontline employees can say the same. This shows that we need to ensure that AI development and implementation isn't leaving any group behind.

“The companies that capture the most value from AI follow the 10-20-70 rule: 10% of their AI effort goes to designing algorithms, 20% to building the underlying technologies, and 70% to supporting people and adapting business processes,” said Vinciane Beauchene, a BCG managing director, partner and coauthor of the research.

What's also fascinating is the call for AI regulation. Despite the positive outlook, there's a general consensus that AI-specific regulations are necessary, with a substantial 79% of respondents advocating for it. It's like driving a car – sure, it gets you from A to B faster, but you still need seat belts and traffic rules for everyone's safety.

The bottom line for leaders: Companies must move quickly to build their employees’ trust and equip them with the necessary skills. The report provides a more detailed view of the survey results and a set of three key recommendations.

  1. Ensure that there are spaces for responsible experimentation

  2. Invest in regular upskilling

  3. Prioritise building a responsible AI program.

So, what does all this mean for us? It's clear that AI is no longer a distant concept. It's here, it's growing, and it's already transforming the way we work. However, as we embrace this change, it's crucial to ensure everyone is on board, adequately trained, and that we have proper regulations in place.
