Maybe showing off an AI-generated fake TV episode during a writers’ strike is a bad idea?

The unveiling of Fable's novel Showrunner AI has certainly piqued my interest today, particularly with its potential to fully generate TV episodes. However, the timing of this announcement could be considered ill-timed, given the current upheaval within the entertainment industry. With creatives presently on strike and the ominous threat of AI-scripted content, this might arguably be the most inopportune moment to introduce such a technology.

Showrunner AI technology, SHOW-1, can purportedly write, direct, edit, animate, and voice entire shows based on simple text prompts. To demonstrate, Fable Studios released a fabricated "South Park" episode created entirely by the AI. While an impressive technical feat, the episode failed to capture the humour that human writers bring. They embedded a full, fake “South Park” episode which you can see below where Cartman tries to apply deepfake technology to the media industry.

The technology, it should be said, is fairly impressive: Although I wouldn’t say the episode is that funny, it does have a beginning, a middle and an end, and distinct characters (including lots of fake celebrity cameos, including fake Meryl Streep).

The technology has significant implications. It provides fans a way to star in customised episodes of their favourite shows. For studios, it could enable new content revenue by allowing subscribers to create their own AI episodes behind a paywall. Fable envisions a future where Disney+ users make episodes alongside Mickey and friends.

But it also poses risks. Showrunner may undermine artistic expression if used irresponsibly. It could reduce demand for human creatives at a time when many already feel displaced by AI. And creating episodes with characters owned by studios without consent raises major ethical and legal issues.

Showrunner is part of Fable's broader mission to develop human-level AI. But the timing of this release feels tone deaf given current industry tensions. With writers and VFX artists striking for better compensation as AI looms, Showrunner reinforces fears that creatives are being devalued and replaced.

For all its technical brilliance, Showrunner highlights challenges in responsibly shaping AI creativity. As generative AI matures, guidelines must be established around acceptable use that protect both human creatives and IP.
