AI Tech Stocks Soar

Just as a heads up, I'm not doling out financial advice here, but I've been noticing something fascinating lately. It seems like AI, is kind of turbocharging the stock market.

You know the S&P 500, right? It's been on a roll this year, up a solid 9%. And guess what's behind much of that climb? A group of stocks that are right smack in the middle of the AI frenzy, and yup, our good buddy, ChatGPT, is part of that mix.

So, who are these high-flyers?

  • There's Microsoft (MFST). They've seen their shares rocket up by over 32% this year, thanks in part to their team-up with OpenAI and their AI-boosted Bing search engine.

  • Then we have Nvidia (NVDA). Their chips are a cornerstone of the AI revolution, and it's reflected in their stock price, which has rocketed up a whopping 110% this year. Impressive, right?

  • And of course we have Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), the parent company of Google, has seen its stock rise by 21.6% this year. They've been getting in on the AI action with their cloud computing platform that offers a suite of AI products.

  • Also, Micron Technology Inc. (MU) is up 25.3% this year. They make memory chips, which are crucial for many AI processes that need to handle massive amounts of data. It's a bit of a bumpy ride with this one though, since demand can be quite volatile in the memory chip business.

  • And let's not forget about the Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF** (BOTZ.O). It's made a nearly 30% gain this year.

And get this, the smart folks over at Goldman Sachs are predicting that generative AI (the same kind of AI that powers ChatGPT) could increase the profit margins of S&P 500 companies by roughly 4% over the next ten years, once it's broadly adopted.

The demand for high-performance microchips is crucial in the AI revolution as they are the backbone of any AI system. This demand has significant implications for the stock market, specifically the shares of companies that manufacture these chips such as Nvidia and Micron that are mentioned above.

But the story of chips and AI doesn't stop there. The geopolitical dimension of the global chip industry is a fascinating tale that's told brilliantly in the book "Chip War: The Untold Story of the World's Most Critical Technology" by Chris Miller. I’ve just finished reading this book and it is a must-read if you're keen on understanding the full implications of the global chip ecosystem on technology, economies, and even politics.

The implications of AI on the stock market and the intertwined story of the global chip industry make for an exciting narrative. As AI continues to evolve and reshape our world, it's clear that the stocks of chip manufacturers will likely play an increasingly important role in the investment landscape. Therefore, it could be a wise strategy for investors to identify and invest in undervalued companies that are well-positioned to ride the AI wave and potentially emerge as pivotal players in this rapidly evolving industry. If you know what those are, feel free to reach out.
