An Alphabet for AI: The Future of Watermarking

It's getting harder to distinguish between AI- and human-generated content. But Unicode presents an ingenious solution in the race to watermark AI-written text.

Only a few months ago, identifying content produced by AI was a simple task. It was marked by unusual inflections in speech, odd visual quirks in photos, and unremarkable language in writing. But the game has changed and the stakes are higher. AI is now so sophisticated that it is capable of fooling even the most astute observers. This raises the urgent need for a mechanism to distinguish human-generated content from AI-generated content.

Today, AI has advanced to the point where it can be used to impersonate voices, create political propaganda, and facilitate spamming. It has become apparent that a universal method for differentiating between AI and human-produced content is essential. This is not only a necessity for consumers but would change how governments, software companies, educational institutions, and brands interact with AI. The question is, how do we achieve this distinction?

Alistair Croll of Wired Magazine wrote a good piece recently on why the Conventional Methods and Why They Fail, as well as looking at a potential solution.

The general consensus amongst legislators and tech companies is that marking AI-generated content at the point of origin is the solution. Three broad approaches to digital watermarking have been considered: metadata, steganography, and encryption. However, these methods present three critical problems:

  1. Complex Coordination: Implementing these methods across billions of devices without fail would be an enormous undertaking.

  2. Accessibility: The solutions must be instantly available to anyone with an internet connection, without any specialized training or hardware.

  3. Limited Scalability: These methods are not suitable for small objects, such as individual words or letters, and don't allow for content that blends human and machine input.

While the challenges might seem insurmountable, a solution already exists: Unicode. Unlike metadata, the Unicode value is the content. By assigning AI its character set using Unicode, we'll have a universal, finely-tuned watermark that functions across all platforms.

This method is not without limitations; the finite space in Unicode and compatibility with text-to-speech tools may present challenges. However, Unicode is widely used, and the organisations guiding its future, including the Unicode Consortium, include many of the same tech giants at the core of generative AI, and three of them just promised to watermark AI content.

The attention and care we invest in our physical well-being should be mirrored in how we treat our mental consumption. The proposal to use Unicode as a mechanism for marking AI content stands as a practical and impartial initial move towards this goal. More than just a technical solution, this approach signals a transformation in our interaction with information. It beckons a commitment to openness and accountability in a time when AI's influence is expanding. The initiation of this new chapter could be as straightforward as a software update.
