Apple announces lots of AI without saying AI

So, I just watched Apple's big show at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023, and let me tell you, it was a feast for tech-lovers. Apple rolled out some really cool stuff, and a lot of it was powered by super-smart technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence. But get this, they barely mentioned the term "AI" and stuck with more specific stuff like "machine learning" or "transformer models". Kinda feels like they were having a bit of a jab at Google, who can't seem to stop talking about AI.

The Apple "Vision Pro" headset was one of the highlights of the event. Retailing for $3499, this mixed reality headset aims to introduce users to spatial computing, integrating the functionality of a wearable MacBook with the potential of virtual and augmented reality. The Vision Pro is designed to operate with popular Apple apps like Messages, Books, FaceTime, and more, all controlled by the user's eyes. It includes several passthrough cameras for a full AR experience and hand tracking, powered by a new operating system also named Vision Pro. Check out the video above from the Keynote (it’s pretty epic).

The new MacBook Air and Mac Studio received significant updates, most notably the addition of Apple's M2 chip. The chip, boasting superior power to its predecessors, is designed to support advanced tasks such as training transformer models, emphasising Apple's focus on ML and AI technologies.

iOS 17, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, introduced several enhancements to improve the user experience. Notably, the autocorrect feature was significantly updated with on-device machine learning to provide better word prediction, inline predictive text recommendations, and grammar fixes. This change underlines Apple's commitment to integrating AI into its product suite without explicitly labelling it as such.

Notably, Apple introduced its own journaling app in iOS 17, which seems to be the first explicitly AI-powered product announced at the event. The app uses on-device machine learning to provide prompts to users, furthering Apple's utilisation of AI technologies.

Apple's approach contrasts with many other tech companies who frequently mention "AI" in their product launches. Apple's focus on practical AI applications without overhyping the technology reiterates its commitment to delivering effective, user-friendly solutions. Their approach to communication around AI is a testament to their focus on product execution over buzzwords, subtly integrating AI into their products while maintaining technical accuracy in their terminology.

Now, I've just given you a quick rundown, and there's a lot more to unpack from the event. For example, they didn't really dive into how AI or machine learning is used in the Vision Pro headset. But don't worry, I'll keep digging and bring you more updates. All I can say for now is that in just 90 minutes, Apple has demonstrated why it is the preeminent tech company on earth. Once again, by executing their strategy of being the best to market rather than the first, they have literally obliterated Zuckerberg and Meta's AR/VR efforts.
