Black Market Boom

China's Hunger for Nvidia's AI Chips

A few weeks ago, we delved into the growing significance of chips in the tech industry, likening them to the new 'oil' powering technological advancements. Now, we're witnessing an unexpected consequence: a thriving underground market for these chips in China. Despite U.S. sanctions, China's hunger for high-end AI chips shows no signs of abating. These chips, integral to powering AI technologies, are driving progress in diverse areas, from surveillance systems to language models. At the eye of this storm is Nvidia, the global tech behemoth, known for its high-performance computing products.

In 2023 alone, China's tech giant, ByteDance, known for TikTok, ordered around $1 billion worth of Nvidia GPUs. This is equivalent to 100,000 units, a significant portion of which are the high-performing Nvidia's A100 and H800 cards.

However, US sanctions imposed on China prohibit the export of Nvidia's two most advanced chips, the A100 and the newly developed H100. This restriction was a part of an attempt to limit China's AI and supercomputing development amid rising political and trade tensions.

But as they say, where there's a will, there's a way. The sanctions have inadvertently given rise to an underground market in China for these high-end chips, with Nvidia's A100s going for double the usual price. The sanctions seem to have only fueled the demand, with AI developers, researchers, and even local authorities keen to get their hands on these powerful processors.

The underground market primarily procures these chips in two ways: from excess stock after Nvidia ships large quantities to big US firms, or through importing via companies in places like India, Taiwan, and Singapore. However, the quantities they secure are small, not nearly enough to build a sophisticated AI model from scratch.

This surge in demand and the consequent emergence of a black market has significant political and economic ramifications. It highlights the increasing importance of AI chips, their role in global tech dominance, and the lengths nations will go to in securing these crucial resources. If by any chance you manage to secure a bunch of H100 chips, feel free to give me a shout. I'd be more than willing to take them off your hands for the retail price plus an extra 5% hahaha.
