Mercedes-Benz's MBUX System now Powered by ChatGPT
Mercedes-Benz provided a preview of how AI will function as a voice assistant in cars. The automaker is adding OpenAI’s conversational AI agent to their MBUX infotainment system to take it to a whole new level. You know how sometimes you have a burning question while driving and there's no one to answer it? Or perhaps you're trying to find a good sandwich shop along your route? Well, Mercedes-Benz has partnered with OpenAI to integrate their AI language model, ChatGPT, into their vehicles. Now that's a conversation starter!

Imagine this: you're driving home, and suddenly you remember you need to cook dinner. You can simply ask your car to suggest a new recipe, and voila, your car becomes a culinary consultant. Or maybe you're curious about some details about your destination. Just ask! The MBUX system can handle it all, and it's all done while keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
Now, you might wonder if this is all just hype, but there are some clear benefits. With ChatGPT, the MBUX system can interact with drivers in a more natural dialogue format. No more remembering specific phrases to activate functions. It's like having a real conversation with your car! A more realistic use case for myself would be to ask the assistant to find a podcast on a specific topic or to do some research on the company I'm driving to for a meeting.
But what about privacy, you might ask. Well, Mercedes-Benz has got that covered too. Any voice command data collected is stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, where it's anonymised and analysed. This helps Mercedes-Benz developers to improve the voice assistant even further.
The beta program will be available to over 900,000 vehicles in the US equipped with Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment system. Drivers can activate the experimental program from June 16 with the voice command “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program.” The update will then be installed over the air free of charge, expanding the capabilities of the company’s existing voice assistant using ChatGPT.
So, the next time you hop into a Mercedes (I would imagine that every other major car brand will have AI assistants within the next few years as well.), you might just find yourself with a chatty co-pilot, ready to assist you with your queries and keep you company on the road.
