Drake x The Weekend - AI's first banger?

The controversial virtual duet ignites debate on IP law

An interesting conundrum came to light over the last couple of days when a an AI-generated song called "Heart On My Sleeve" featuring the voices of Drake and The Weeknd has gone viral, amassing over 250,000 Spotify streams and 20 million views on TikTok & Twitter.

This song uses artificial intelligence to clone the voices of Drake and The Weeknd. The track simulates the two stars trading verses about pop star and actress Selena Gomez, who previously dated The Weeknd.

The creator, known as @ghostwriter, claims the song was created by software trained on the musician's voices. "This is the 1st example of AI-generated music that really wowed me," Mckay Wrigley, an AI developer, on Twitter.

The rapid rise of the technology has rattled the music industry. Heart On My Sleeve, for example, does not infringe copyright, as it appears to be an entirely original composition. Despite Drake's recent comments on AI-generated music, artists continue to take issue with the rising count of deepfake songs. Other faked tracks that have gone viral recently include a "deepfake" of Rihanna singing Beyoncé's Cuff It; and a cloned Kanye West singing the acoustic ballad Hey There, Delilah.

Copyright law is not advanced enough to have specific guidelines regarding generative AI, but in the legal code's existing state, transformative parody is permissible. UMG has recently taken steps to prevent the proliferation of AI-generated music that rips off its recording artists.

To help bring control back to artists, technologists Mat Dryhurst and Holly Herndon founded "Spawning AI," which allows users to search for their artwork and see if it has been incorporated into an AI training set without their consent.

French DJ David Guetta recently used a site called uberduck.ai to mimic the voice of Eminem and add it to one of his instrumentals. "I'm sure the future of music is in AI," he told the BBC. However, he said the technology could only be useful "as a tool" - like the drum machine and the sampler before it. "Nothing is going to replace taste," he said. "What defines an artist is, you have a certain taste, you have a certain type of emotion you want to express, and you're going to use all the modern instruments to do that."

It will be interesting to see how this situation develops, as it highlights one of the many regulatory issues that arise from innovative technologies like AI. While AI has a lot of potential, it also presents risks to our creative communities. Therefore, it is crucial that we get this right early on so we don't risk losing the artistic magic that only humans can create.

For now, Ghostwriter’s fake Drake and The Weeknd song remains on Spotify, but it may not be there for long.
