Wimbledon's Winning Approach to AI

For over three decades, IBM has been at the forefront of digital evolution at Wimbledon, thanks to a long-standing partnership with the All-England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC). This year, the tennis tournament is capitalising on the capabilities of generative AI to offer revamped digital experiences on its app and website. This innovation is powered by IBM's newest AI and data solution, watsonx.

IBM initially led the use of AI in curating video highlights back in 2017, a feat that saw the IBM Consulting team bag a 2023 Emmy® Award. The AI utilised factors like player reactions, crowd noise, and game analytics to spot videos worthy of the highlight reel in both tennis and golf.

In a new twist this year, Wimbledon fans can listen to AI-generated commentary in their favourite highlight reels. The AI provides commentary at the beginning and end of each reel and on critical points. Additionally, fans can switch on closed captions to make the content more accessible, adhering to AELTC's commitment to inclusivity.

This solution is anchored on a foundation model crafted using watsonx, IBM’s comprehensive AI solution aimed at overseeing AI models' lifecycle. It all starts with watsonx.data, a data repository that combines different data sources while allowing developers to sift through data for elements like hate speech, profanity, or personal data. The AI Commentary project used almost 130 million documents as its source material.

This extensive data then trained a substantial language model chosen from watsonx.ai, a cutting-edge studio for creating and training AI models for business applications. The model was subsequently fine-tuned to encompass Wimbledon's specific domain knowledge, including the incorporation of unique Wimbledon jargon, for instance, using “gentlemen’s draw” instead of “men’s draw.” The completed model, possessing 3 billion parameters, will be continually monitored for performance using watsonx’s governance tools.

IBM iX, IBM Consulting's design experience branch, works with the Club all year round to design, develop, and secure the tournament's website and mobile apps. Its mission is to incessantly improve the digital experience while retaining Wimbledon's traditional charm and simplicity.

Twice every year, the IBM iX and Wimbledon teams conduct workshops using the IBM Garage™ methodology. This approach creates a blueprint for the development and iteration of features that boost fan engagement. Besides AI Commentary, the teams are launching several other enhancements, such as AI Draw Analysis and Path to the Final.

The AI Draw Analysis provides data-driven predictions based on a draw ranking for each singles player, immediately after the tournament draw. Another feature, Path to the Final, gives users a projection of each player's journey from round one through to the final.

The collaboration between IBM and Wimbledon, rooted in the power of automation and AI, continues to offer a groundbreaking fan experience to millions across the globe and is on full display during this week and next week of the Championships.
