Google’s Full House of Innovation

Tech giant shows us their AI hand

Apologies for the delay in today's edition. I was watching the Google I/O Keynote, which was jam-packed with new AI advancements. After OpenAI's ChatGPT caught the tech world off guard last year, Google reportedly declared a "code red," scrambling to plan a response to the new threat. The first result of that reorientation was its Bard chatbot and some generative AI features integrated into Google Workspace apps, which were released earlier this year. At Google I/O 2023, we finally got to see a more complete picture of how the company views AI's role in its cloud-based productivity suite and wider product ecosystem.

Here is full 2 hour keynote

Here is a roundup of some AI tools that caught my eye:

Google Search gets AI-powered “snapshots”

Google Search is receiving a major update in the form of a feature called AI snapshots. If you opt in to a new feature called Search Generative Experience (SGE), you'll start seeing AI-powered answers at the top of some search results, which can provide more context for your search. You can then narrow down the information in the snapshot with follow-up questions.

These AI snapshots are powered by an updated version of Google's large language model (LLM) called PaLM 2, which Google also announced at I/O. The model already powers 25 Google services, including the company's chatbot, Bard, and includes improvements in reasoning, coding, and translation.

Bard is now available to everyone

Google has announced that its AI-powered chatbot, Bard, is now available to everyone, regardless of whether they were on the waitlist. In addition, the company has added support for Japanese and Korean languages, as well as an easier way to export generated text to Google Docs and Gmail.

The update also includes new features such as dark mode and visual search, with plans to add even more functionality in the future. This includes AI image generation using Adobe’s AI image generator, Firefly, and integrations with third-party services like OpenTable and Instacart.

Google introduces Duet AI for Workspace

Duet AI for Google Workspace brings generative artificial intelligence to Google's apps, enabling you to do everything from preparing for meetings to organizing your day, visualizing solutions, and more.

For example, in Gmail and Google Docs, Duet AI allows you to generate full responses based on just a few words. Further down the line, contextual assistance will feature too, enabling professional replies that automatically fill in relevant contact information.

While these Workspace features enable you to compose emails or generate images from text in Slides, they're currently only available to those who sign up for the waitlist.

Google Photos adds an AI-powered Magic Editor

Google Photos is getting a brand-new AI-powered editing feature that lets you make pretty significant edits to a photo, like enhancing the sky, moving a person or object, and getting rid of people in the background. It will arrive in early access to select Pixel users later this year.

The inner nerd in me, I always look forward to the annual Google I/O event. However, the real excitement begins next month at Apple's WWDC. As a fanboy with every Apple product under the sun, I am eager to see how Apple plans to integrate AI into their ecosystem.

In the meantime, I have managed to get onto some waitlists and will be testing and using some of the new Google tools in the coming days. I will provide in-depth reviews and showcase workflows that will undoubtedly help the Domorewith.ai community. So, make sure you keep sharing the newsletter with friends and colleagues.

Personal or Professional: Professional or Personal

Task Time with AI: <5 minute
Cost Saving: Priceless

Want to get better at negotiation by training yourself with random detailed scenarios? Try this ChatGPT prompt:

I want to do deliberate practice about how to conduct negotiations. You will be my negotiation teacher. You will simulate a detailed scenario in which I have to engage in a negotiation. You will fill the role of one party, I will fill the role of the other. You will ask for my response to in each step of the scenario and wait until you receive it. After getting my response, you will give me details of what the other party does and says but allow for a back and forth dialogue and wait to grade the interaction until the negotiation has been completed. You will grade my response and give me detailed feedback about what to do better using the science of negotiation. You will give me a harder scenario if I do well, and an easier one if I fail.

Please let us know if there are any workflows, tasks, or roles that you would like us to feature.
