GPUs: The 'New Crude Oil'

Back in high school, before I became an Apple fanboy in 2003, I was a bit of a computer (PC) nerd, always tweaking my self-assembled PC to ensure it had the top-of-the-line GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) to game on. If you're not quite up to speed with what GPUs are, they are essentially components in devices that require graphics rendering, such as computers, gaming consoles, and even some smartphones.. They were originally the powerhouse that makes every detail of your favourite games come to life with breathtaking detail. But these days, they're not just about gaming. They're actually the unsung heroes powering the AI revolution, with industry heavyweights like Nvidia and AMD leading the charge.

AI is all about dealing with mountains of data, and GPUs are tailor-made for this task. They're designed to multitask like a pro, making them the perfect fit for training AI models. Even the big guns like OpenAI are heavily dependent on GPUs. They recently let slip that they're facing GPU limitations, which is putting a spanner in the works for their short-term projects.

You might be wondering, "Why don't we just make more GPUs?" Well, it's not that straightforward. We've been dealing with a major GPU shortage in recent years. The culprits? A perfect storm of circumstances. Firstly, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge in demand for GPUs as everyone was stuck at home needing computers. Then, cryptocurrency miners, the new kids on the block, started snapping up GPUs because they're brilliant at mining coins. Add to that the pandemic-related disruptions to the manufacturing process. The fallout was a significant drop in GPU supply and a rise in their prices.

Peering into the future, it's interesting to consider whether GPUs might become as common in households as microwaves, but for running AI models. With AI becoming more and more integrated into our everyday lives, it doesn't seem too much of a stretch, right?

So that's the scoop on GPUs and AI. They are becoming the ‘new crude oil’ - microchips that provide the power to the world’s largest companies and countries in the AI arms race.
