Harvey Specter Meets Harvey AI

How AI is Changing the Game for Lawyers

Imagine a world where Harvey Specter, the charismatic closer from the TV show "Suits," meets an AI counterpart that empowers him to outmaneuver his opponents even more effectively. In reality, artificial intelligence (AI) is indeed making an impact in the legal profession, and startups like Harvey.ai are taking center stage.

Like ChatGPT, Harvey AI is built on a version of Open.AI’s GPT AI. Unlike ChatGPT, Harvey AI supports legal work. How? Starting with general internet data from the GPT model, Harvey AI was further trained with general legal data (including case law and reference materials). When engaged by a firm, Harvey AI is then trained by the firm’s own work products and templates (much like a new employee’s onboarding when joining a law firm!).

Harvey AI assists with contract analysis, due diligence, litigation, and regulatory compliance and can help generate insights, recommendations, and predictions based on data. As a result, lawyers can deliver faster and more cost-effective solutions for client issues.

In February 2023, Allen & Overy, one of the world’s largest law firms, announced its partnership with Harvey AI. Since November 2022, the London-based law firm reported that over 3,500 of their lawyers have already tested Harvey AI by asking 40,000 questions during their day-to-day work.

The results sound promising. As David Wakeling, the head of Allen & Overy’s Markets Innovation Group said: “…I have never seen anything like Harvey … Harvey can work in multiple languages and across diverse practice areas, delivering unprecedented efficiency and intelligence. In our trial, we saw some amazing results.”

Given suits aired its last episode in 2019, the idea of Harvey Specter collaborating with Harvey AI will always be a fantasy, it's essential to consider the challenges and limitations of incorporating AI into the legal profession.

The impact of AI on the legal profession may not be as revolutionary as we imagine. Large law firms, such as the fictitious Pearson Hardman, are structured around partners who focus on their annual share of profits. Convincing these partners to invest in research, development, and technology implementation may prove challenging, even for someone as persuasive as Harvey Specter.

While the idea of Harvey Specter teaming up with AI is exciting, it's important to maintain a realistic perspective on the potential of AI in the legal world. AI technologies like Harvey AI are undoubtedly promising and have the potential to benefit the industry, but they won't drastically change the way law is practiced overnight.

As fans of "Suits," we can't help but imagine how Harvey Specter would use AI to close cases and win battles in the courtroom. However, the legal profession will likely continue to evolve gradually, with AI's advancements being embraced without succumbing to hyperbole. In the meantime, we can enjoy the fantasy of Harvey Specter and Harvey AI joining forces to dominate the world of law. One can't help but wonder if the creators of Harvey AI drew inspiration from the legendary Harvey Specter, the best closer in New York, when naming their cutting-edge platform.
