High School 2.0 - Envisioning the ChatGPT Influence

On Twitter, I saw someone refer to it as the ‘Homework Apocalypse’. This fall in the US, as AI becomes more common among students, there's a sense of unease among educators, students, and parents, as they attempt to grasp what this means for their future.

I quickly imagined traveling back in time to my 7th form year at Napier Boys High School in 2004 and having access to advanced tools like ChatGPT. I considered how it could have impacted my educational journey. It was quite a fascinating thought experiment. The reality is that current students are facing this very situation, and it's challenging them to rethink how they approach their learning.

In this rapidly evolving landscape, students are left with pressing questions: How can AI be incorporated into their daily studies? What does this mean for traditional homework that now seems obsolete due to AI? How can AI be harnessed as a learning companion or co-creator? And, more importantly, how does AI shape their future learning paths? Educational institutions, in response, will need to quickly adapt to address these queries.

Let's consider some longstanding assignments to better understand the changes that are on the horizon.

Assignments

Assignments have been an educational staple for a long time. Whether it's penning down book reports, summarising chapters, or formulating responses to articles, students are expected to engage in a dialogue with the reading material. But with AI's adeptness at summarising and interpreting information, it's no surprise that students might turn to AI for assistance. They're now likely to interact differently with text, prompting educators to rethink their approach. I could have definitely improved my grades in Business Case Studies massively by getting the opinions of the world's greatest minds on specific scenarios at the touch of a keyboard.

Essays

Essays are a hallmark of education, serving as a reflection of students' thought processes and understanding. Yet, large language models can generate convincing essays, which some educators have already encountered. The reality is that the output of advanced AI like GPT-4 can't be easily detected, even by specialised systems. This can lead to false accusations, especially for non-native English speakers, creating a significant dilemma for educators. With this in mind, educators must reassess their expectations from essays. It's not just about preserving the assignment's value, but also about incorporating the potential of AI to enhance students' writing abilities and receive more in-depth feedback.

Problem-Solving

Problem-solving, another valuable part of traditional education, are now being swiftly solved by increasingly efficient AI models. With recent advancements, AI tools like Bing can even process multimodal input to solve visual problems, although it's not foolproof. If you're an educator assigning problem-solving exercises, you may want to test them against the latest AI. The results may astonish you.

Whilst the proliferation of AI in education might seem to jeopardise well-established assignments. It's important for us to quickly adapt in order to maintain the benefits of traditional methods and accommodate the transformative power of AI. This will require immediate efforts from educators and education leaders, including clear policies around AI use.

However, it's not just about preserving old types of assignments. AI presents an opportunity to generate novel approaches to teaching methods that can motivate students in innovative ways. No doubt it's a challenging period for education, demanding swift adaptations and experimentations. Let us acknowledge the exciting changes on the horizon with the "Homework Apocalypse" nearly upon teachers and parents alike.
