OpenAI's Bet to Tame Superintelligent AI

Have you heard about OpenAI's latest move to tackle the possible challenges posed by superintelligence? They call it Superalignment, and it's quite an interesting concept. Let's dive into it, shall we?

You see, OpenAI predicts that superintelligence - AI systems much smarter than us humans - might be the most game-changing invention we've ever whipped up. It could help tackle some seriously tough global issues, but as you can guess, it’s not without its dangers. This powerful tech, if mismanaged, could lead to humanity's disempowerment or even worse, extinction. A bit dramatic, right? But the stakes are truly that high!

So, the billion-dollar (actually probably trillion-dollar) question OpenAI is trying to answer is, how do we make sure these ultra-smart AI systems actually follow human intentions? Because, let's face it, we won't always be able to keep a close eye on these superintelligent AI. They could outpace us before we know it. OpenAI’s goal is to solve the core technical challenges of superintelligence alignment in four years.

OpenAI doesn't currently have all the answers but they're taking a swing at the problem with Superalignment. Their idea? Build a human-level automated alignment researcher. Think of it as an AI specialist who ensures that other AI systems are behaving as they should. Then, they’ll throw a ton of computational power at this researcher, allowing it to iteratively align the superintelligence.

The first steps in this grand plan involve coming up with a training method that can scale, validating the model produced, and stress testing the whole pipeline. Essentially, they want their AI systems to help evaluate other AI systems (a concept they call scalable oversight). They also plan to use automated search techniques to find any problematic behaviour or internal issues in their AI (robustness and automated interpretability).

Then, to make sure their system is bulletproof, they'll stress test their pipeline with misaligned models and check if their techniques can detect these misalignments (adversarial testing).

But this is just the start. OpenAI anticipates that their research priorities will shift as they learn more, and they’re all geared up to adapt. They're assembling an elite squad of machine learning pros to tackle this head-on and they're committing a significant chunk of their computational resources to solve this challenge in just four years.

All this effort is in addition to the existing work at OpenAI aimed at enhancing the safety of current models and addressing other AI risks. While this new team focuses on aligning superintelligent AI systems, they're also considering the larger societal concerns with the help of interdisciplinary experts.

There's something compelling about Ilya Sutskever and his crew at OpenAI. The way they've approached their challenges so far, and the innovative steps they're willing to take, make them seem like just the right team for a task as daunting as this one. Now, the ball is in their court, and they've set their sights on the most pivotal game of our time.
