McKinsey's AI Adventure

McKinsey and Company, the global consulting firm with more than 30,000 employees in 67 countries, is embracing new generative AI tools in a major way: Nearly 50% of the firm’s workforce is using ChatGPT and similar technology.

Their staff have been playing around with these AI tools every day, experimenting in their tech sandbox. There are some rules of course. For instance, they're not allowed to upload any confidential information on these services, which makes sense, right? We wouldn't want any secrets slipping out.

And it's not just about having fun with new toys. They've got a strategy in place to safely integrate this AI into their work. They're considering everything from where the AI tools and data will be stored, to the user interface and experience, and even how to support employees as their work evolves due to AI.

In fact, AI is already changing how people work at McKinsey. Junior analysts, for instance, are shifting their focus from gathering research and preparing pitch decks to more value-added tasks. It's like how we've been saying, right? AI is here to take over the mundane stuff so we can focus on what's more important.

The four Cs: how McKinsey customers are using generative AI

  1. Coding: Some of McKinsey’s client software developers had seen productivity gains of 35-55% by using ChatGPT and similar tools.

  2. Customer engagement: Some companies are using generative AI to offer more personalised customer interactions.

  3. Creative content generation: Marketing firms are already using generative AI to streamline their content generation processes and to refine their audience segments, approaching a “segment of one,” i.e. marketing personalized for every individual.

  4. Content synthesis: Firms are using generative AI to combine different data points and services in new ways.

And this isn't just a McKinsey thing. They're seeing a broader shift in the business world. CEOs are no longer just asking what AI is, but are now asking how to use it, what the risks are, and how it'll impact their employees. It's not about whether AI is over-hyped anymore. It's about how to make the best use of it.

The productivity gains from all this could be huge. McKinsey estimates that correcting current productivity lag could add a whopping $10 trillion to the US GDP. I mean, that's a lot of dough! But it's not just about technology. Changes in hiring practices and regulations, and the shift towards a more skills-based approach are also playing a part.

So, isn't it fascinating how fast things are moving? I can't wait to see what's next. I hope this gives you a good idea of how McKinsey is embracing AI in the workplace. I am still trying to discover more specifics about how companies of all sizes are using AI. Over the coming weeks, I will do my best to provide examples that some of you may be able to implement within your own roles and businesses.
