The Clickbait that Pays

Despite the existence of many skilled journalists and media professionals, I've found myself increasingly disillusioned with the industry over time. Surprisingly, I've even taken to blocking all of New Zealand's major media outlets on my devices. And it's not just them, the big international players are just as culpable, churning out sensationalised story after sensationalised story.

Take the topic of AI in 2023, for example. The media's coverage of it is so skewed and erroneous it's almost laughable. They've painted a picture where AI is either set to usher in an apocalyptic doomsday scenario, spelling the end of civilisation, or it's the miraculous panacea that'll solve all the world's problems. The narrative feels akin to being trapped in an ever-evolving science fiction movie, each twist more unbelievable than the last.

But here's the deal, the reality of AI is far less dramatic and a lot more practical than the media would have us believe. AI, in its current form, is a tool - a really cool tool, I might add - that's designed to enhance our capabilities, not replace us or destroy the world.

Think about it. We've got AI helping doctors to diagnose diseases earlier, making our cars safer, and even helping us find the best Netflix show to binge-watch next. Not so scary, right?

But then, why does the media keep pushing these exaggerated narratives? Well, the problem is that the media and journalism have completely different incentive structures. They're often rewarded for creating clickbait headlines that grab our attention, instead of providing us with quality information or a balanced view of the truth.

You see, sensational stories sell. They generate clicks, shares, and views, which in turn brings in advertising dollars. And let's be honest, a headline that screams "AI to Replace All Human Jobs!" is a lot more eye-catching than "AI Helps Improve Efficiency in the Workplace".

But we need to remember that media is a business, and like any business, it needs to make money to survive. Unfortunately, this often means that the truth gets a bit distorted along the way.

This doesn't mean that we should ignore the potential challenges that AI brings - like ethical concerns, job displacement, or privacy issues. But it does mean that we need to take these doomsday headlines with a grain of salt and dig a bit deeper to understand the real story.

So, the next time you read an article about AI taking over the world or curing all diseases, remember that the truth is somewhere in the middle. AI is a powerful tool that can do a lot of amazing things, but it's not a dystopian threat or a utopian solution. It's just an incredible technology, ready to help us create a better future.
