OpenAI releases enterprise-grade version of ChatGPT

Companies using ChatGPT Enterprise have access to fast ChatGPT, more security, and unlimited GPT-4 queries.

OpenAI finally released a version of ChatGPT that promises to protect business data as more companies consider using the platform but worry about privacy and security.

In a blog post, OpenAI said ChatGPT Enterprise offers better security and privacy, unlimited high-speed access to GPT-4, more powerful data analysis so companies understand information much faster, and the ability to ask more complicated questions to ChatGPT.

Privacy and security have been a concern for businesses who fear their data could be used to train ChatGPT and are worried that using the tool might accidentally expose sensitive customer information to AI models. OpenAI said users of ChatGPT Enterprise will have control and ownership over their data, which will not be used to train GPT at all.

Other features like customising ChatGPT’s knowledge of company data and even more advanced analytical tools will come soon. Eventually, the company said, it will also offer ChatGPT Enterprise pricing options for smaller teams.

Since ChatGPT's launch just nine months ago, OpenAI have seen teams adopt it in over 80% of Fortune 500 companies. The 80% statistic refers to the percentage of Fortune 500 companies with registered ChatGPT accounts, as determined by accounts associated with corporate email domains. They said they’ve heard from business leaders that they’d like a simple and safe way of deploying it in their organisation. Early users of ChatGPT Enterprise—industry leaders like Block, Canva, Carlyle, The Estée Lauder Companies, PwC, and Zapier—are redefining how they operate and are using ChatGPT to craft clearer communications, accelerate coding tasks, rapidly explore answers to complex business questions, assist with creative work, and much more.

“ChatGPT Enterprise has cut down research time by an average of an hour per day, increasing productivity for people on our team. It’s been a powerful tool that has accelerated testing hypotheses and improving our internal systems.

The company said it is “onboarding as many enterprises as we can over the next few weeks.”

OpenAI said this is the first enterprise-focused product for ChatGPT and is separate from ChatGPT and ChatGPT Plus, the subscription plan for faster access to ChatGPT.

Companies already using ChatGPT can choose to stay with the current options to access ChatGPT, the company said in an email, but can switch to ChatGPT Enterprise if they want access to the new features.

Organisations have been building generative AI tools using OpenAI and GPT-4, but many choose to connect to GPT-4 via API or cloud services. Some companies began to create their own large language model-type systems to protect their data from the more extensive training dataset of GPT, but this can be unwieldy for smaller firms.

Vendors aiming to provide data security and privacy while accessing LLMs like GPT-4 have cropped up, especially as companies in more regulated sectors want to use generative AI tools while protecting sensitive data. With the release of an enterprise-grade ChatGPT, there’s bound to be more competition for many of these companies.

From engineers troubleshooting bugs, to data analysts clustering free-form data, to finance analysts writing tricky spreadsheet formulas—the use cases for ChatGPT Enterprise are plenty. It’s become a true enabler of productivity, with the dependable security and data privacy controls we need.

Recently, OpenAI announced it opened GPT-3.5 for custom fine-tuning, allowing users to customise specific tasks for ChatGPT, which now seems like a prelude to the larger enterprise offering for ChatGPT.

One key differentiator between ChatGPT Enterprise and the consumer-facing version: ChatGPT Enterprise will allow clients to input company data to train and customise ChatGPT for their own industries and use cases, although some of those features aren’t yet. The company also plans to introduce another tier of usage, called ChatGPT Business, for smaller teams, but did not specify a timeline.

While this is great news for the enterprise and AI in general, it will certainly harm all AI wrapper companies and startups. From a more skeptical perspective, it seems that OpenAI may have promoted GPT wrapper startups primarily to gather insights on what functionalities to build directly into ChatGPT. If this is the case, it serves as a stark wake-up call about the risks inherent in platform dependency. In addition to other initiatives, I've been consulting with several companies on the creation of Prompt Libraries. Given the recent news, these libraries are set to become essential components for businesses aiming to seamlessly integrate AI into their operations.
