Spotify’s AI DJ Is Actually Good

Recently, Spotify unleashed its innovative AI DJ product, offering a uniquely personal music experience. I first tried it at the gym two weeks ago, and it has since become an integral part of my daily routine. This application of AI has transformed my workouts and musical exploration in an entirely immersive way, so I thought I would share my insights into the new AI DJ , including an evaluation what I both appreciate and think could be better, an exploration of how it functions, and my thoughts on ways it could be enhanced in the future.

It's definitely unlike any music personalisation product I've experienced. Indeed, the selection of songs is exceptional, largely a reflection of my eclectic yet refined musical taste (I’d love to see what the DJ spins for my Wife given her interesting tastes). But what truly stands out in this new experience is the paradigm of the voice, the "DJ," who intermittently interrupts the tracks, personalising the experience by calling my name, "Sam, this one's for you." This personal touch elevates the experience and is, without a doubt, the most impressive part of it all and does actually feel quite human-like.

Up until now, the idea of AI assistants possessing a truly human-like quality was something I was unsure about embracing. However, over the past couple of weeks, my thoughts have shifted to a resounding yes.

"Hey Sam, let's turn back time with your love of 1990s bangers." My response? Absolutely, let's do it. Hit me with some Third Eye Blind, whose debut self-titled album ranks among the greats.

Even when I'm not necessarily in the mood for a particular track, there's something in the way it's presented that wins me over. Could it be the personalisation? That unique connection that seems to replicate the warmth of human interaction?

I think that most of the industry is viewing this technology in its capacity as a tool, but there is a whole additional side to it when you actually interact with the AI like this, it’s almost like personality and experience design.

What I also loved about the product is:

It feels like radio without the ads

Let’s face it, everyone hates ads. We get why they exist, but it’s honestly the biggest reason I ditched radio for a music streaming service in the first place.

I find myself drawn to the idea of "calling in" to my AI DJ, nostalgically reflecting the days when I'd patiently wait on hold for hours to Extreme 100 (a Hawkes Bay Radio Station to request Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever for a 11 year old girl I had a crush on at Intermediate).

It's easier than building a playlist

The biggest reason to use Spotify DJ is a big selling point for any AI — it does the work for you. Rather than trying to find the right album or playlist, I can just press the DJ card on the Spotify app home screen and it starts picking music for me. If I don’t like a song, I can just skip it.

It has improved the more I use it

Spotify DJ has gotten better as I’ve used it. Yesterday at the gym, DJ surprised me by starting off with this absolute banger of a song called Jonny P’s Caddy which features an absolutely killer verse from one of my favourites in J. Cole. Just as I was beginning to think it wasn’t serving me up with enough new music.

What sets this apart is the infinitely scalable nature of the experience, which can be delved into much further and applied across various other disciplines.

Consider those moments when you wish to provide your customer with the undivided attention of your entire team, but find that it's not scalable in areas such as:

  • Selling a Product

  • Onboarding

  • Customer Support

The ability to personalise at scale with this technology feels unprecedented and like nothing we've encountered before.

Congratulations to the Spotify team; you've not only launched something pretty cool but also managed to break new ground in personalised entertainment. Their innovative approach to utilising AI in the musical experience is reshaping the way listeners interact with and enjoy their favourite tunes. The unique blend of technology and personalisation speaks volumes about Spotify’s commitment to pushing boundaries and enhancing the user experience. It's an impressive achievement, and I'm eager to see where they take this concept in the future.

It will also be even better when you can give it a quick voice command like “pump me up at the gym” or “feeling like some love ballards”.
