The AI Interface Revolution

Transforming the Way We Interact with Technology

Interaction with AI is becoming second nature to us, signifying a massive shift in how we interface with technology. These interface revolutions tend to happen fast, as seen in the mobile revolution over a decade ago.

When Facebook almost missed the mobile revolution in 2011, the company had to pivot quickly to avoid being left behind. Mark Zuckerberg shifted the entire company's focus to mobile, and it worked. Facebook's stock soared 900% from its May 2012 IPO to its peak in September 2021, proving the importance of adapting to such revolutions.

The AI revolution is happening at a rapid pace. In a few years, it will sound silly to call a company "an AI company" just as it sounds silly today to call a company "a mobile company." AI will be part of everything. AI-native companies will emerge, just as mobile-native companies did in the 2010s, capitalising on the shift in interfaces and posing a challenge for incumbent businesses.

New ways of interfacing with AI are already emerging. OpenAI President Greg Brockman recently demonstrated how ChatGPT plugins and DALL-E can streamline processes like meal planning and shopping. By seamlessly integrating with platforms like Instacart and Twitter, ChatGPT can create a shopping list, place an order, and share a recipe—all within minutes.

This example shows how our interactions with businesses are about to change dramatically. Rather than visiting individual websites or apps, AI interfaces like ChatGPT will handle everything for us. The discovery of platforms like Instacart or Amazon will become fundamentally different.

As AI interfaces become more widespread, we can expect to see more stories like Facebook's near miss with the mobile revolution. Companies that embrace AI-native approaches will have the upper hand, while those that fail to adapt may struggle to stay relevant.

The AI interface revolution is upon us, and it's time for businesses to take notice and adapt. Those that can successfully navigate this new landscape will have a significant advantage in the rapidly evolving world of AI technology.

These examples raise interesting questions about advertising, customer acquisition, brand, and distribution. In the coming days, we will explore some of these questions in greater detail.
