AI and Automation Will Transform Jobs, Not Eliminate Them

The rapid advancement of AI has raised concerns about the potential threat it poses to human jobs. However, a new report by IBM suggests that instead of replacing human workers, AI and automation will lead to the creation of an "augmented workforce," where humans and machines collaborate to enhance productivity and deliver exponential business value.

While a report by Goldman Sachs estimated that AI could replace 300 million jobs worldwide, representing a quarter of global work activity, IBM’s research offers a more optimistic perspective. The key to realising this augmented workforce lies in the successful training of the workforce. IBM emphasises that human expertise will continue to hold value in the job market, but individuals need to acquire additional skills to effectively work alongside AI.

According to the study, 40% of the interviewed business leaders believe that their workforce will need to develop new skills in the next three years to adapt to the evolving needs of human-machine partnerships. The report also suggests that while all workers will be affected by the division of labor between humans and robots, low-skilled and routine jobs are more likely to be filled or modified by machines. Executive and senior management positions are considered less susceptible to automation, with only 22% of business leaders surveyed foreseeing their impact.

In terms of skills that will be highly sought after in an AI-driven job market, soft skills related to human talents are considered paramount. Time management, task prioritisation, teamwork, and communication abilities are mentioned as essential qualities of the future workforce.

Interestingly, the report highlights a shift in the desirability of skills. While STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields were highly coveted in 2016, the focus has now shifted towards the development of soft skills.

Overall, the emergence of AI and task automation is not expected to eliminate jobs but instead transform them. With the right skills and training, humans can work in synergy with machines, leading to increased productivity and new opportunities in the workforce.

Based on IBM’s research and experience in the field, they’ve outlined a framework that helps executives lead the augmented workforce through a time of change. They identified three key priorities that can help them elevate employees and gain a competitive edge:

1. Transform traditional processes, job roles, and organisational structures to boost productivity and enable business and operating models that reflect the new nature of work.

2. Build human-machine partnerships that enhance value creation, problem-solving, decision-making, and employee engagement.

3. Invest in technology that lets people focus on less time-consuming, higher value tasks and drives revenue growth.
