How AI will grow up with Children
As artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT rapidly advance, children are poised to become one of the earliest and most intuitive groups to adopt this technology. I was talking to my Mum over the weekend on how AI might impact young children and their education. I was also listening to a Podcast over the weekend with tech entrepreneur Marc Andreessen, and he was saying his 8-year old son quickly grasped ChatGPT's capabilities and interacted with it effortlessly. Andreessen realised that unlike adults, kids don't view AI as novel or amazing - to them, asking questions and getting helpful answers is just what computers are meant to do.
One of the fun things you can do with ChatGPT is you can say, ‘Explain X to me,’” he noted. “Then you can say, ‘Explain X to me as if I’m 15.’ And then you can do it as if I’m 10, then you can do as if I’m 5. It kind of works down to about age 3. So you can do, ‘Explain quantum mechanics to me like I’m a 3-year-old.’ And it will. And so I taught him how to do this. You can dial it up or down.”
What surprised him, he said, was the reaction of his son, who simply shrugged and replied, “Okay.”
“And I was like, ‘No, this is a big deal. They didn’t use to do this. Now it does this, and this is amazing,’” Andreessen said. His son’s response, he said, was, “Well it’s a computer. Of course you ask it questions and it gives you answers. What else is it for?”
Andreessen realised that unlike adults, kids don't view AI as novel or amazing - to them, asking questions and getting helpful answers is just what computers are meant to do.
Andreessen believes that growing up with AI assistants and tutors will allow kids to develop relationships with technology very different from older generations. Over years of childhood use, AI could build an in-depth understanding of each child's abilities, interests, motivations, and limitations. It could then leverage this knowledge to provide personalised education, playing to students' strengths while shoring up weaknesses.
Equipped with AI allies from a young age, the workforce of the future may enter jobs with an advantage over older coworkers. They will be more productive and capable with the help of AI systems that have known them intimately for years. While some view artificial intelligence as a threat, early and intuitive adoption by kids may allow them to see it as a collaborative tool instead. By starting young, future generations will be fully prepared to maximise the benefits of AI in education and beyond.
I'm uncertain about the optimal approach to teaching AI to children, especially those at pre-high school level. However, I suggested to Mum that allowing some advanced kids to experiment with ChatGPT could be beneficial, even if we don't have all the answers yet. I'm confident that in the near future, more appropriate and specialised educational resources, integrated with AI, will be made available.

AI is like mobile was in the mid-2000’s, but instead of just iPhone and Android, there are dozens of phones and all are being upgraded weekly. Wild times.
