I read a new report from Intercom overnight that reveals how AI and automation are transforming the customer service industry. We are currently in the infancy of an AI upheaval that will fundamentally transform multiple sectors. Customer service is among the initial domains to experience this impact.
The quantum leap forward in generative AI will substantially reduce the burdens of deploying and managing AI for customer service. It is now possible to use this technology on a large scale throughout the entire customer journey. Therefore, the question is no longer "Should I use AI or not?" but rather "When and how should I implement it?”
The report contains numerous insights, along with practical advice that can help harness the power of AI. This can enhance how businesses approach customer service delivery, creating better experiences for both their customers and teams.

69% of leaders plan to invest more in AI this year, with 55% saying ChatGPT has made them more likely to adopt AI. However, only 38% have invested in advanced AI so far, signaling a huge opportunity for early adopters.
Trend 2: The role of humans in customer service is evolving, not diminishing
78% of leaders expect AI to create new opportunities and roles within 5 years like conversation designers and chatbot strategists. AI will handle simpler queries, enabling humans to focus on building relationships and tackling complex issues.
Trend 3: Efficiency is more critical than ever – and AI is the key
66% of leaders are excited to use AI to increase team efficiency this year. 60% expect AI to reduce costs over 5 years. Leaders cite 24/7 support, faster resolutions, and fewer manual tasks as key benefits.

While 67% of leaders say customers are ready for AI, only 45% of practitioners agree. Leaders need to share their enthusiasm with teams and bring them along on the AI journey.
