UK going all in on AI

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has ambitious plans to transform the UK into a leading AI hub, and from what we've seen so far, he's making some serious moves. In a recent announcement at London Tech Week, Sunak stated that Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic have agreed to open their AI models to the UK government for research and safety purposes. This priority access, according to Sunak, is intended to help build better evaluations and to better understand the opportunities and risks of these systems.

Recognising the strength of the UK’s AI expertise, US tech giant Palantir also recently announced it will make the UK its new European HQ for AI development. Palantir, which already employs more than 800 people in the UK, has provided many of the world’s most critical enterprises and institutions with foundational architecture for data processing. Alexander C. Karp, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Palantir Technologies Inc. and chairman of The Palantir Foundation for Defense Policy & International Affairs said:

“The ability of institutions to effectively capture the recent advances of artificial intelligence, and in particular large language models, will determine which organisations succeed and ultimately survive over the longer term.”

But it's not just about getting access to fancy AI models. The UK is also gearing up to host the first-ever global summit on AI safety. This summit, set to take place in the autumn, will bring together key countries, leading tech companies, and researchers to agree on safety measures to evaluate and monitor the most significant risks from AI. The idea is to foster an international framework for the safe and reliable development and use of AI.

The UK's AI sector is no small fish either. It already contributes £3.7 billion to the UK economy and employs 50,000 people across the country. With the country's departure from the EU, the UK now has the agility to respond more quickly to this rapidly changing market. The UK government has even launched an expert taskforce to help build and adopt the next generation of safe AI, backed by £100 million of funding. Plus, there's a commitment to spend £900 million developing compute capacity, including an exascale supercomputer in the UK.

I must say, it's a pretty clever move by the likes of Google, OpenAI and Anthropic. By getting the government on your side, you can allow them to examine your AI, and maybe they'll give you a thumbs up on its safety. Plus, it's been a big PR win, judging by the response online.

With the UK's departure from the EU, the country can now act more quickly and nimbly in response to the rapidly changing market. According to Sunak, AI is one of the key tools for fixing public services in the UK, and I tend to agree with him. However, execution will be tough, and critics may want it to fail. Only time will tell whether this move is a stroke of genius for the country's economy or just another political play. Perhaps it will be both.
