What Is AI Doing To Art?

AI-generated artwork is prompting hard questions about human creativity. The history of the photograph shows why the terms of the debate are wrong.

I recently read an interesting piece in Noema Magazine about "What Is AI Doing to Art?" The article discusses how the advent of AI-generated artwork is provoking robust debates about the nature and future of human creativity. This scenario is reminiscent of the historical debates that arose with the development of photography in the mid-19th century, as it too was a form of automated image creation that raised questions about the role of human creativity in art.

In 1835, when William Henry Fox Talbot produced a crude photograph of his estate, he proclaimed that his house had drawn its own picture. This marked a key moment in the automation of image production, which previously needed a draftsman's hand. The precision, speed, and cost-effectiveness of photography were touted as its advantages, but these developments led to questions about the implications for visual culture. The key question was: could images made largely by machines be considered art, and if so, where did human creativity fit into this process?

Over time, a consensus was reached, establishing photography as both a form of objective mechanical documentation and creative human expression. This reconciliation of perspectives saw the creative role of the human operator in the framing and development of the image, while acknowledging the camera's role in the process. This understanding helped photography to secure copyright protections and facilitated its commercial proliferation, particularly in the industrialising Europe.

Creativity & Commercialisation In The Age Of AI

Today, we are witnessing a similar debate with AI-generated images. Companies like OpenAI and Stability.ai are producing images that challenge the traditional definitions of art and creativity. These images, often generated from a simple text input, are flooding spaces previously exclusive to human authors, including painting competitions, commercial graphic design, and portraiture. This intrusion of technology into traditionally human domains is forcing us to reconsider the nature of creativity and its exclusivity to humans. A recent lawsuit against Stability AI underscores this point, as it hinges on whether originality is exclusive to human creators. The outcome of this case and the potential adjustments to copyright law could have significant implications for creative economies.

Art is far more than what can be captured digitally on the internet, but the internet is an indispensable tool for artists seeking to earn a living. The proliferation of AI-generated images in online environments will not eliminate human art entirely, but it does represent a reshuffling of the market incentives that enable creative economies to thrive. Like the college essay, another genre of human creativity threatened by AI usurpation, creative "products" may become more about the process than the art as a commodity.
