Who Would've Thought?

The AI That Took Your Job Could Now Get You a Better One!

Yesterday, while listening to a podcast, I heard Reid Hoffman (Founder of LinkedIn) say that humans should be amplified by AI, not replaced. He repeatedly used the term "Amplification Intelligence" instead of "Artificial Intelligence" which I thought was a really good way to frame the role of AI.

The media, in their constant quest for clicks and eyeballs, tend to focus on the negative and most extreme side of AI, such as the Robot Apocalypse and massive job losses. Personally, I am a short-term pessimist and a long-term optimist. Although my thinking changes almost hourly given the new sources of data and technology available, I actually believe that AI will help spark many career transformations. If AI can perform your job, wouldn't it be smart enough to retrain you for a more sophisticated role? I believe so.

There is no doubt that the rapid evolution of AI is already creating a seismic shift in the job market, reminiscent of the way the introduction of tractors revolutionised farming. With the advent of tractors, manual labourers had to adapt to new roles that required different skills, such as operating and maintaining these machines. AI brings a similar challenge and opportunity today.

AI has not only proved to be a labor-efficient tool but also an effective mentor. Just as tractors transformed farming into a more productive and less physically demanding industry, AI is transforming many job sectors by automating tasks and enhancing human capabilities.

Where tractors freed farmers from back-breaking manual labor, AI liberates workers from repetitive and mundane tasks. Just as the tractor could not replace the farmer's knowledge and decision-making skills, I’m still in the camp that believes AI can't truly replace the uniquely human abilities of creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence, although it would be naive to think it won’t get better at some of these abilities.

Retraining with AI involves a process known as adaptive learning. This approach leverages AI algorithms to understand the learner's strengths, weaknesses, and optimal learning pace. This is akin to how farmers had to learn to operate and maintain tractors when they first came into use. Farmers didn't stop at just learning these new skills; they improved and adapted them over time, a process that AI can significantly expedite and enhance in today's world.

The analogy extends further. The introduction of tractors didn't mean the end of farming jobs, but rather the evolution of them. Similarly, AI doesn't signify the end of jobs, but rather their transformation. An AI training program could use your existing understanding of data, augment it with new skills such as data analysis, and retrain you to become a data analyst. This transition, like the transition from labourer to tractor operator, elevates you to a higher position with potentially greater pay and career prospects.

I believe that the future of work is not a dystopian world where humans are jobless and ruled by AI overlords. Instead, it is a world where AI and humans work together, with automation leading to career transformations. AI serves as a guide and amplifier, helping humans to reach new levels of success in their professions. Just as tractors once required adaptation and learning, AI is a new technology that can be learned and utilised. If an AI is capable of doing your job, take the opportunity to let it retrain you for an even better position or let it take care of the shitty parts of your work. The future is not about human vs. machine but human with machine.

Next week, I will release a new weekly segment showcasing the automation workflows I am currently using. Thank you for reading today's newsletter and for all the messages of support I've received this week.

Have a great weekend.
