Yesterday, I read a fascinating piece discussing how the worldwide labor pool of outsourced and contract workers are not only the early adopters of generative AI but also the most vulnerable.

Following the sensational debut of ChatGPT at the close of 2022, pundits of future work trends, AI ethicists, tech industry leaders, and investors have been embroiled in intense discussions about the effect of generative AI on our work methods. Half a year on, one international workforce finds itself on the cutting edge of the generative AI upheaval: workers in offshore outsourcing roles.

These include workers hired per commission or on a contractual basis, such as freelance copywriters, artists, and software developers, as well as more formal offshore workforces like customer service agents. As generative AI tools present a new model for cost cutting, pressure is quickly mounting for these outsourced workers to adapt or risk losing work.

Rest of World reached out to freelance workers around the world to learn how they use generative AI. They commissioned two pieces of work from each: one created with AI, and one without and here were the results:

A Copywriter living in Nigeria

AI Tool Used: Midjourney

No AI: 3 Hours 47 minutes

The contractor did research online, and then wrote and edited her blog post in Google Docs with the help of Grammarly.

With AI: 20 minutes (91% Faster) and better output.

The contractor prompted ChatGPT to first outline and then write a blog post, which she edited using Google Docs and Grammarly.

Illustrator living in Mexico

AI Tool Used: ChatGPT

No AI: 94 minutes at a cost of $70

He searched Google for references, created a line drawing on paper, and took a photo of it. He traced his drawing and added color with Adobe Illustrator.

With AI: 32 minutes at a cost of $50

He prompted Midjourney to create a variety of images. He then used Photoshop to combine elements from several generated images.

Marketing Designer in China

AI Tool Used: Stable Diffusion LoRA model developed by Wu Dayu

No AI: 7 days at a cost of $3,500

Rest of World commissioned Designers to do a photo-shoot with a particular dress. The Designer used their photos to create a simple promotional design using CorelDraw, Xingtu, and Snapseed.

With AI: 1 day at a cost of $140

Rest of World sent Designer the same dress, which he photographed on an employee. He prompted a customized version of Stable Diffusion to generate photo-like images, which he edited.

The influence of generative AI on outsourced workers is anticipated to be more complex than an abrupt, large-scale displacement.

At present, numerous analysts rightly dispute the concept of these tools resulting in "complete automation" — usually characterised as using machines to perform tasks without any human assistance. Instead, the prevalent condition of generative AI essentially aligns with what specialists term as augmentation. The initial adopters of generative AI are predominantly operating in conjunction with these technologies — regarding them more as instrumental aids rather than replacements.

However, it's undeniable that the trend is moving towards those utilising Generative AI being significantly more efficient than those not employing it. Grasping how to incorporate these tools into your workflow to enhance your creativity and productivity is poised to become crucial for all workers in the upcoming 18 months.
