Google’s medical AI chatbot is already being tested in hospitals
The Mayo Clinic has reportedly been testing the system since April.
Have you heard the news about Google's latest foray into healthcare? Yes, Google! You know, the tech giant that has a hand in almost everything, from your emails to your online searches, and now, your health-related questions too. Meet Med-PaLM 2, Google's new medical AI chatbot.
According to the Wall Street Journal, since April, this AI tool has been undergoing testing at Mayo Clinic and a few other research hospitals. What's Med-PaLM 2, you ask? Well, it's an offshoot of PaLM 2, the language model that powers Google's Bard. Unlike Bard though, Med-PaLM 2 has been specifically trained to answer medical questions.
Google thinks Med-PaLM 2 can be a game-changer in places where doctors are a luxury (Think New Zealand… as well as third world nations). Imagine having a medical expert available at your fingertips, 24/7! The chatbot was trained on expert medical demonstrations which should, theoretically, make it better at healthcare conversations than your average AI.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Even Google acknowledges that Med-PaLM 2 isn't perfect yet. Some physicians found its responses contained more inaccuracies and irrelevant information compared to human doctors. But when it came to showing signs of reasoning, aligning with medical consensus, and demonstrating correct comprehension, Med-PaLM 2 stood its ground.
Remember, your data stays yours, even while testing Med-PaLM 2. It's all encrypted and beyond Google's reach. Sounds like a breath of fresh air in today's data-leaking world, doesn't it?
Don't go counting on this chatbot to replace your family doctor just yet though. As Google's senior research director, Greg Corrado, put it, he wouldn't want Med-PaLM 2 on his family's healthcare journey right now. But he's optimistic that this tech can multiply AI's beneficial roles in healthcare by a factor of ten.
I've had a fantastic experience with Tend, a telemedicine provider from New Zealand over the last couple of year. It's honestly revolutionised my healthcare routine with simple repeat prescriptions at the click of a button. So, you can bet that I'm excitedly watching as AI starts making waves in the healthcare scene. I genuinely believe that it has the potential to be a major driving force for a healthier world.

One interesting question in AI right now is what paradigm will win. Will it be more like apps where end-users understand and use dozens or hundreds? Or is it like dev frameworks where users never know and just devs care? Or is it like operating systems where just a couple rule?
